Steering Rack Problem

just found a nother problem this morning.

when i started it up the steering rack is very jerky but when it warms up is seems to be ok, could it be the rack ro the pump (1997 tdi) i have checked the fluid and thats fine?

please help as i am begining to wish i had never bought it!

Check the aux belt and tensioner first, if its slipping it'll be giving uneaven power assist to the steering which will come across as a jerky feeling at the steering wheel.

Make sure your pump is tight, I see this alot and its nearly always the pump is loose

yes i agree, my car eats belts have to adjust it four times in a month till its bedded in then outer edge is all shredded on my 3rd belt now in a year but at

how do i check the belt as i cant see the pump??

would you reccomened if i changed the fluid?

Hi you need to take off the undersheild cover to access the pump, you will be able to check the tension easier

What about the alternator pulley? when did they start fitting the freewheeling ones that later on dont freewheel and give those symptoms?

tightened pump and now works great.
